My life is composed of airplane food.
Which definitely isn't the worst thing to have foremost in your life. Especially when you're in the care of Ethiopian Air. The journey began at 8 am. Mom and Dad dropped me off at the Ethiopian Air counter, I saw all my Med team and T&L squad-mates, and we checked in and passed through security! Leaving parents behind is always when I"m like "wow here we go!" Everything went so quickly though. Security was fast, waiting at the gate was fast as I panic-stickenly worked on my med school application, and then boom we were on the plane. Some observations and events:
1. They served us 3 meals in a 13 hour flight, which was a LOT of food
2. I really like airplane food mostly because it comes in the tiny containers on the tiny tray and all fits together. It doesn't get much better than that.
3. I caught some sleep briefly as the flight began, but that ended when the well-meaning man in front of me reclined his chair farther than I EVER imagined seats could recline. My spine probably fractured as I was sleeping face-down on my tray table. Everyone around me was struggling not to laugh at me as I struggled to understand what had just happened. To give you a picture of how close he was: if I sat up straight, I could see over his head to his nose. I feel it was a bonding experience.
4. There were so many children. And they could go from running playing and laughing to screaming instantaneously and without any visible impetus. It kept things fresh!
5. Ethiopian stewardesses are a) all beautiful and b) impervious to turbulence. They could pour us coffee while we gripped our seats white-knuckled.
There is much much more but I"m running up quite a tab so I'll have to add later. We are safely in the capital city of Lilongwe where we will be until Saturday. No wifi to speak of yet so no photos but I will stay vigilant! I love hearing from people via facebook message so say hi or give me tips on haggling, chichewa, or general abroad-ness.
With love and without personal space,
Lauren
